How to Cost Your Will

HELP!  Ive just been quoted £850 for my Will and I dont know why!

Costing your Will can be done using a modular approach with us and our prices are very competitive.  You can choose what you would like to provide for and we will give our recommendations as to what you should do according to your wishes.  For example the base cost of a Will with us is just £99 with no additional clauses.  Additional clauses are usually required (though not always) and start from £80.  For example clauses that provide for guardians, digital assets, substitute beneficiaries, pets, charitable donations, funeral wishes (not legally binding like the rest of the Will so a Letter of Wishes is often used), specific gifts, are all £80 (they are however subject to client requirements and complexity).  So a reasonably straightforward Will with say three additional clauses may be £339.  For more information on costs please click on the link to the Costs page.

Further considerations may include:  grandchildren, stepchildren, foster children, unmarried or remarried couples and have separate children, the way the family home is owned and need a life interest, specific gifts and what you would want to happen if a child or other beneficiary passes before you in order to prevent that part of your Will failing.

You may require special provisions or a trust for your property, land, business to protect it, or to protect dependants who may have special circumstances or are minors.  These can be very useful in the right circumstances, with the right powers given (but when applied without the correct consideration can produce difficulties).  This type of clause starts from £349 (which aims to undercut most).

So, to cost you may take a base Will at £99, (see my costs page which describes a base Will and to see if you can see whether you will need extra standard clauses such as described in the first paragraph).  There, you can consider whether you may need a life interest trust, or another type of trust that can be put in place by your Will.

Examples might be a base Will, subsitution clause, digital assets clause, guardian clause £99 + £80 x 3 = £339.  If you need to protect property or a person, or make a life interest that may be £349 which is £668.  Whichever type of Will you make, if it is for a couple you will receive discounts (The same applies for LPAs).  So even a full Will with a trust, with us is a competitive price.

You may need a Letter of Wishes describing your funeral wishes where there may be specific instructions and detail, faith based information or personal values to give instructions on, reasons why you are disinheriting someone or giving a particular set of instructions, which includes three clauses with their own set of instructions and wishes is £120 for the extra document, which again will have a discount for a couple.

Please also see the costs page where the full cost of the base Will (£99) is refunded where a Will over £300 is created and documents ordered within a six month period to a total of £800.  Please also note the information on the costs page where we can organise staged payments during that period if you wish.

Most people do have a number of considerations which is why the off the shelf WHSmith Will does not usually suffice and many matters are now ending up in dispute in the courts.  Further regulations are being discussed and SWWEPP have been part of that.  A Will writer has an unusually high duty of care because of this, and must have the necessary insurances and regulations in place.

Ensure you are using a Will writer who is taking the time to produce a thorough and effective Will.
